Peter Dann delivered an extension and refurbishment of Hartham Leisure Centre for East Herts District Council. The extension provides two additional storeys on the footprint of the existing reception area.
The site has a number of new dry side features including reception/foyer, café and seating areas, soft play area, two studios and one spin studio, refurbished and new dry changing facilities and a fitness suite with130 stations. On the wet side of the facility, the pool hall has been refurbished and improvements made to include village change facilities for pool users.
The extension has been designed with an expanse of curtain wall glazing to attract as much natural light into the building as possible. A large outdoor seating area with new landscaping complements the café. On the opposite side of the building, a living wall has been incorporated.
The mono pitched roof of the extension is structured with glue laminated timber rafters and formed with rolled eaves dropping on to the living wall. Demolition materials were recycled into the new scheme to form part of the materials for the gabion cage benches around the building. Sustainability is a key part of the development with the project seeking a BREEAM Excellent rating.
