Peter Dann worked alongside architects Cube Design and 5plus and the wider project team to deliver a full refurbishment and spectacular new rooftop bar for The Imperial Hotel on Russell Square.
Arcus is housed in a steel-framed rooftop extension creating a tenth-floor destination above the existing hotel. The project brings together structural engineering and architecture in a particularly striking way: the new butterfly roof complements the geometric language of the existing Brutalist building. Archive drawings from the original 1960’s construction of the building were used to assess the capacity of the existing structure to support the additional vertical and lateral loads from the extension. Moment frames provide stability to the steel frame and allow extensive glazing to the perimeter of the bar to make the most of the views across London.
Our work also included structural elements of the wider refurbishment, including a new plantroom structure, mezzanine, stairs and lifts.
