Gilesgate Student Accommodation

This student accommodation building in the city of Durham is on the previous site of a pub – The Durham Light Infantryman – and its surrounding grounds and carpark.

Vibro replacement stone columns were used to improve the ground prior to placing the concrete strip footing. Pre-cast beam and block was adopted for the ground floor with a timber framed building above ground floor for the majority of the accommodation blocks. Some blocks had a steel framed podium structure to enable the more open-plan space at ground floor to be accommodated.

Steel-framed stair structures were built for access to each floor with careful consideration to the shrinkage of the timber being necessary within the finishes. The block on the site of the original pub was constructed in traditional masonry and timber floors.
