This Canadian 10-storey, 155 room Alt Hotel overlooking the Bow River in Calgary’s East Village in Alberta was completed in early 2019. The top eight storeys of the building are modular and designed by Peter Dann, with the podium and core designed by a Canadian engineer.
In depth collaboration was required between the designers of the two parts of the building to ensure that the structure functions correctly as a whole. Connections between the steel framed modules and the reinforced concrete core were a particular challenge, with a requirement to allow for varying shrinkage and axial shortening of the different materials.
This project involved several other significant design and logistical challenges, with the site being subject to high wind and seismic loads as well as the Europe-built modules being shipped/trucked to the site in central Canada.
