The citizenM Bowery hotel has officially been lauded as “the nation’s largest modular construction hotel project ever” – a 20-storey hotel with roof-top bar and 300 rooms in total, with wall-to-wall windows overlooking scenic New York.
The build is a mix of traditional and modular construction, with the first four floors being traditional and thereafter 15 floors of modules. Level 20 is a traditional steel/concrete floor.
The modules were built offsite in Europe to save on time and material wastage, then shipped to New York for installation; roughly one floor of modules per week. The 4th floor is a 1200mm thick podium slab for transferring the weight of the modules to the gravity structure below.
The 4th floor podium also acts as the diaphragm for the lateral load at this level to transfer to the concrete shear walls.
