citizenM’s Tower of London stands as not only the group’s flagship hotel but also the largest, with 370 rooms as well as the top two floors consisting of societyM – a business club. It sits in a complicated and sensitive location above the Tower Hill Underground Station and adjacent to the World Heritage Tower of London.
We worked closely with our client to design the modular superstructure; steel cages were used to create the bedrooms which were fabricated and fitted-out offsite. A lightweight modular steel solution ensured the nine-storey hotel could be built over the existing underground station where only five storeys had been possible before.
The hotel’s façade is an impressive aesthetic of Portland stone, darker vertical fins of glass reinforced concrete and horizontal bands of aluminium. All 370 rooms took just 11 weeks to erect.
