Alt Hotel St. John’s

This waterfront Alt Hotel in Newfoundland, Canada, was constructed on the historic grounds of an 1800’s Marshall Brothers cellar. Groupe Germaine respected the site’s heritage by ensuring the existing cellar was incorporated into the hotel’s landscape, allowing old and new to co-exist.

The hotel comprises five storeys and 148 rooms with views of the Narrows and downtown St. John’s, and boasts 4,000 square feet of meeting space. As structural engineers on this project, we are pleased to report that the Alt Hotel opened on time, with all four floors of modules placed in just four weeks.

The project had several significant challenges, with the site exposed to adverse elements on the North Atlantic Coast. The modules were also installed in the middle of winter surrounded by snow, which would have made a traditional construction-alternative near impossible at that time of year.
