This purpose-built day surgery centre creates provision for the treatment of 2,300 children and young people every year. It is a separate building constructed adjacent to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
The building comprises six storeys, including a top plant level, and is a structural steel-framed construction with composite concrete floor slabs, supported off-piled foundations.
Peter Dann’s brief was to undertake the design of the steel-to-steel connections. This included the design of connections forming a truss used to support the overhanging building, with axial tension loads up to 4500kN.
The design challenge was the presence of an existing brick sewer which restricted the position of the piles. This resulted in cantilevering the front and rear corners to one side of the building, including an area 15m long by 5.5m wide.
The new day surgery opened in 2023 for the Evelina Children’s Hospital, which is a part of Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
